A Ritualistic Burning

Yesterday evening I incinerated my decade-spanning porn collection in a personal purification ritual. I approached it much like a coming of age ceremony, albeit heretical. Some 20 magazines were torched in a highly controlled pyrotechnical display.

This small back garden burning is in in some sense akin to the destruction of a literary cultural heritage across the world particularly attributed to the god-fearing and pious man. In the Sikh tradition, damaged copies of the Guru Granth Sahib are cremated in a ceremony similar to the funeral of a deceased man.

"Dort, wo man Bücher verbrennt, verbrennt man auch am Ende Menschen." ~ H. Heine
