Artist as Fisherman

My interest in fishing arose out of the limitations of the kite. Please, allow me to elaborate; While on holiday on the Isle of Skye (Birthplace of my Caucasian ancestors, the Mackintosh's) my friend Rich and I purchased a kite to keep ourselves amused. As you might imagine the amusement ran dry pretty quickly. By chance we stopped off at a garage cum tackle shop and were convinced by a very cunning mechanic cum tackle salesman to purchase two unforgivably cheap telescopic fishing rods. The rest is history as they say.

I have been fishing ever since and have subsequently bought / inherited a great deal of fishing paraphernalia. Many happy hours have I spent alone in some secluded spot. Fishing for me is a meditative experience which I find is actually very similar to painting in as much as the feelings I get. It takes me to a sublime non-place where things happen which are beyond my understanding or control, a sub-aquatic world which one may only glimpse from the surface. Comparable...yes my friends...to that of the subconscious.

"Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing it is not fish they are after."
~ Henry David Thoreau

"My Caucasian ancestors". But Indians are classed as caucasians as well, strictly speaking.
